Furniture Delivery & Measuring Guide

Make Sure Your New Furniture Fits Before Delivery Day

At China Towne Furniture & Mattress, we want your furniture delivery to be as smooth and stress-free as possible. A little preparation before delivery day can make a big difference.

Furniture may look like the perfect size in a showroom or online, but getting it into your home requires more than simply measuring the room. Doorways, hallways, staircases, corners, ceilings, elevators, and even access from our delivery truck to your home can affect whether a piece can be successfully delivered.

Measure your furniture. Measure your room. Measure the path between them.

Will the furniture fit in your room?

Will the Furniture Fit in Your Room?

Start by measuring the area where you plan to place your new furniture.

Check the width, depth, and height of the piece and compare those dimensions with the available space in your room.

Remember to allow enough room for:

  • Walking paths
  • Opening doors
  • Pulling out dining chairs
  • Opening drawers
  • Reclining furniture
  • End tables and coffee tables
  • Other furniture already in the room

When shopping at China Towne, product dimensions can help you determine whether an item is appropriately sized for your space. If you have questions about measurements, ask one of our furniture specialists for assistance.

Don't forget the delivery path

Don’t Forget the Delivery Path

Making sure the furniture fits in the room is only the first step.

You’ll also need to make sure it can travel safely from our delivery truck all the way to its final location inside your home.

Measure These Areas

Use a simple icon grid here rather than another large photograph:

Front Door
Measure the usable width and height.

Hallways
Look for narrow areas and tight turns.

Stairways
Check width, ceiling height, railings, and landings.

Corners
Large sofas often require more turning room than expected.

Elevators
Measure both the elevator door and interior.

Final Room
Make sure the piece has enough room once it arrives.

Step 1: Measure Your Doorways & Entryways

Measure every doorway the furniture will need to pass through.

Doorway Height

Measure from the floor to the lowest point at the top of the doorway.

Doorway Width

Measure the narrowest usable opening from one side of the door frame to the other.

Turning Clearance

Measure the space immediately before and after the doorway.

A sofa may fit through the doorway itself but still be unable to make the turn into the hallway on the other side.

TIP:
Don’t forget what’s attached to the doorway.

Storm doors, screen doors, handles, trim, railings, and other features can reduce the amount of usable space.

Step 2: Measure Your Furniture

Measure the furniture’s:

Width × Depth × Height

For larger upholstered pieces such as sofas and sectionals, diagonal depth can also be important because furniture may need to be tilted or rotated while passing through a doorway.

For taller pieces such as dressers, cabinets, bookcases, and entertainment centers, consider what happens when the piece has to be tilted.

If you’re unsure how to measure a piece you’re considering at China Towne, ask one of our team members for help.

Step 3: Compare the Furniture to the Entire Route

Don’t compare the furniture to your doorway alone.

Picture how the piece will actually travel through your home.

Ask Yourself:

  • Can it get through the exterior door?
  • Is there enough room to turn once it’s inside?
  • Can it travel through the hallway?
  • Will it clear stair railings?
  • Is the ceiling high enough?
  • Can it turn on the stairway landing?
  • Can it fit through the final doorway?
  • Is there adequate space once it’s in the room?

Measurements looking close?

If you think clearance may be tight, contact China Towne within 1 week of your order to make any changes.

Our team can help you review the situation before your furniture arrives ready to be delivered.

Pay Special Attention to Stairs & Tight Turns

Large furniture and staircases can be a difficult combination.

Measure:

  • Stairway width at its narrowest point
  • Ceiling height
  • Railings and banisters
  • Turns in the staircase
  • Stair to ceiling measurement of any low angles
  • Depth of wall just within a threshold before a turn
  • Landings
  • Doorways at the top and bottom

If your furniture must turn on a landing, measure the width, depth, and ceiling height of the landing itself.

There has to be enough room not only for the piece to fit, but also for our delivery team to rotate and maneuver it safely.

Apartment or Condo Delivery?

If you live in an apartment, condominium, or multi-story building, please check the building’s delivery requirements before your scheduled date.

Confirm:

  • Elevator dimensions
  • Elevator reservations
  • Approved delivery hours
  • Loading dock access
  • Building management requirements
  • Protective elevator padding requirements
  • Certificate of insurance requirements, if applicable

Please arrange any required building access before our delivery team arrives.

Get your home ready for delivery day

Get Your Home Ready for Delivery Day

Before our delivery team arrives:

  • Move existing furniture out of the delivery area
  • Clear boxes, toys, shoes, and other obstacles
  • Remove fragile décor from the delivery path
  • Move rugs that could become a trip hazard
  • Secure low-hanging light fixtures
  • Remove doors if additional clearance will be necessary
  • Keep pets safely away from the delivery area
  • Make sure sidewalks, steps, and entrances are accessible

A clear path helps protect your home, your new furniture, and our delivery team.

Don’t Forget the Path Outside

Delivery planning starts before we reach your front door.

Check your property for:

  • Narrow streets
  • Narrow driveways
  • Tight turns
  • Steep driveways
  • Low tree branches
  • Utility wires
  • Carports
  • Gates
  • Limited turnaround space
  • Snow or ice
  • Uneven walkways or steps

Can a 26-Foot Box Truck Reach Your Home?

DESIGN RECOMMENDATION:
Make this one of the most visually prominent callouts on the page.

Use a contrasting background, truck icon, and large 26 FT graphic.

China Towne Furniture & Mattress delivers using a 26-ft box truck.

Please make sure your street, driveway, and delivery area can safely accommodate a 26-ft box truck, including enough room for the truck to:

Enter → Park → Maneuver → Exit

Check for adequate clearance from:

  • Tree branches
  • Utility lines
  • Cable and telephone lines
  • Building overhangs
  • Carports
  • Bridges and other structures
  • Mud, construction or debris along route or turn around
  • Snow or ice coverings

Have a difficult driveway or private road?

If you have a narrow driveway, steep hill, low overhead clearance, difficult turnaround, private road, or another access concern, please contact China Towne before your scheduled delivery.

Advance notice gives us an opportunity to review the situation and determine the best approach.

When Your New Furniture Arrives

Once your furniture is inside your home, take a moment to inspect it with our delivery team.

If you notice a concern, bring it to the attention of the delivery team at the time of delivery so it can be properly documented.

We want you to be happy with both your new furniture and your China Towne delivery experience.

Measure Twice. Deliver Once.

Use a polished room scene from the folder that creates an aspirational finishing moment. A Bassett or BenchMade room shot would work particularly well.

A few minutes spent measuring before you buy can help prevent disappointment on delivery day.

Remember:

1. Measure the furniture.

2. Measure the room.

3. Measure every doorway, hallway, staircase, and turn along the delivery path.

4. Make sure your property can accommodate our 26-ft box truck.

If you aren’t sure whether a piece will work in your home, talk with a China Towne Furniture & Mattress team member before purchasing.

We’re happy to help you plan for a successful delivery.
